Sunday night at the Quebec is cabaret night and as always the age range of the customers was staggeringly inclusive... from twenty-something, tattooed, no-photos-please Brazilians right thru to the silver haired sector of our scene, all generations were represented. In a change from the norm, entertainment didn't come from a man in a dress miming but rather from a straight cockney former boxer (via Malaga judging by his tan) with an extraordinarily good operatic tenor voice. Gari Glaysher, for that was the cherubs name, sang a varied repertoire from classical Italian (Rigoletto and Neapolitan arias) to the Spanish 'Granada' to musical theatre numbers (Les Mis and West Side Story) and sing-along operatic favourites. His 50 minute act was pitched perfectly at the cultured audience and with a finale of that perennial tenor's favourite Nessun Dorma, the capacity crowd were rapturous with their applause. Due to be supported by Dick Emery's daughter, Eliza, sadly her performance suffered from technical gremlins so didn't materialise, but Gari's show was stupendous and, although it wasn't Covent Garden (where he has sung), he gave his all to the appreciative onlookers. |
