Despite a somewhat foreboding sky, the Taverners and friends turned out in force for the Royal Vauxhall Tavern's Sports Day 2008. The rain held off, and the sun actually made an appearance, as proceedings were opened by the tossing of a golden handbag by Lambeth's Mayor Angie Meader. Held in conjunction with GMFA, Sports Day is now a regular event and mixes the traditional with the downright ridiculous! Twelve teams competed this year in events as diverse as the egg and spoon race, space hopper relay, 50 metre mince, sack race, tug of war and drag relay with points being awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Hostess Timberlina needed a cattle prod at times as marshalling the contestants was a bit like herding cats (try it and you'll see what we mean), but after much tussling and the raising of more than £4,000, the Sodomites were declared the winners while the Mighty Metamorphic Zebras collected the trophy for the team that raised the most money overall. Another raging success for all concerned!
It being the RVT Chillout's birthday weekend, at 6pm the fabulous Lonnie Gordon performed on stage knocking out her big hits Love Eviction, Gonna Catch You, Happening All Over Again and No Regrets. With a tear in her eye from the thunderous applause she received her Big Time encore went down a storm and paved the way for DJ's Simon Le Vans and Andy Almighty who kept the party going til well in to the small hours. |
